LAKELAND - Twice as much space, new equipment and added services were on display Tuesday as Central Florida Health Care and Lakeland OB-GYN showcased the new building where Central Florida's certified nurse midwives see patients.

The midwives had shared a building with the obstetrical group's physicians, but growing numbers of babies meant both the midwives and the physicians needed more space. CFHC and Lakeland OB-GYN have a public-private partnership in which they work together in providing pregnancy care. The new building the nurse midwives occupy has slightly more than 4,000 square feet. It's at 1729 Lakeland Hills Blvd. Lakeland architect John Wallis of Wallis, Murphey, Boyington of Lakeland designed the building. Henkelman Construction Inc. of Lakeland was the general contractor.

It has seven exam rooms for the midwives, along with an exam room and a procedure room for a physician. The midwives have delivered about 3,500 babies in two years.
