Florida Southern College

Carol Jenkins Barnett Center for Early Childhood Learning and Heath              & Curry Education Center

The 17,700 square foot, two-story Carol Jenkins Barnett Center for Early Childhood Learning and Health and Curry Education Center includes multiple classrooms and offices for 15 faculty members. The facility houses the Early Learning Preschool/Lab, which provides an opportunity for Florida Southern College’s School of Education and School of Nursing and Health Sciences to conduct research and prepare both teachers and nurses on how education and health affect each other in early childhood.

Bok Tower Gardens

Henkelman Construction, Inc. transformed over 8 acres of undeveloped area on the Bok Tower Gardens property. The result of this expansive project is a beautiful natural landscape for all to enjoy.  New landscaping, hardscaping and irrigation was installed throughout the 8 acre space, along with new ADA compliant asphalt and concrete pathways. Highlights of the project included a new bog and wetland area with native plantings, new restroom and classroom buildings, and a new outdoor kitchen which is used to serve prepared food to visitors during demonstrations and events. A two acre section of the property was developed into a Children’s Garden, which included play structures and man-made rock formations for climbing.

Polk State College Lake Wales Campus

The former Lake Wales City Hall building constructed in 1920 was renovated to provide a new campus for Polk Community College. The Mediterranean Revival structure contains five 30-seat classrooms, two 45-seat computer classrooms and a 30-seat multipurpose room for classes and community use.

Polk’s Nature Discovery Center

Polk’s Nature Discovery Center consists of classrooms, exhibit and museum space, and a banquet facility. This new Discovery Center provides a natural environment for the children of Polk County to learn about the plant and wildlife of Florida. Car paths, bike paths, and boardwalks were provided to allow access to Lake Hancock. This project has been widely recognized and has been considered for several awards from the State of Florida.

Florida Southern College Nursing Building

Construction was recently completed on the new, 8,633 square foot Joe K. and Alberta Blanton Nursing Building for Florida Southern College. The structure is masonry with steel barjoists and decking, and will consist of classrooms, a simulation laboratory, a student lounge, and faculty offices. According to Florida Southern College, the building will house their growing nursing program, which includes “Polk County’s only four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program.

Kathleen Senior High School Master Plan

The Master Plan project for Kathleen Senior High School consisted of 155,919 square feet of new construction for four new buildings, renovations to 36,770 square feet of five other buildings, and additions for four additional buildings. Extensive site work throughout the campus was also completed. This $28,000,000 project was completed in phases on an active campus.

Polk State College Student Center

Henkelman Construction completed the first LEED Certified project for Polk State College with the addition and renovation of the Student Center on the Lakeland campus. The scope of work entailed a complete remodel and replacement of the existing 18,000 s.f. Student Center, including dining areas, commercial kitchen area, and gathering areas. The existing two-story, pre-stressed concrete and brick veneer facility was remodeled to varying degrees, from complete demolition on the first floor to replacement of finishes on the second floor. A new, two-story, 8,000 square foot addition features an open air lobby with a massive circular stairway that leads to study, meeting, and classroom areas.

Marion Creek Fire Station

Henkelman Construction was selected by the Polk County BoCC to construct this new, 7,600 square foot fire station in Poinciana, FL.  The building is a masonry structure with wood roof trusses and a shingle roof.  The building includes living quarters, a kitchen, a dayroom, offices, a training room, an apparatus bay, and bunker gear storage.

Solivita Fire & EMS Station

Fire and EMS. It consists of a masonry building with pre-engineered wood trusses and clay tile. The site work included concrete paving and retention ponds.

Florida Southern College Music Auditorium

The Davis Fine Arts Building received an extensive interior renovation of its 8,000 square foot music auditorium. With its superb acoustics and visual aesthetics, this facility provides the Florida Southern College music department with the perfect environment for rehearsals and performances.

Florida Polytechnic University Dining Renovation

The Henkelman Construction team completed the construction of two new eating establishments on the Florida Polytechnic University campus. Students can now enjoy a meal from Einstein Bagels, and from the university’s new “Innovation Kitchen”. This special kitchen has been constructed with all the equipment needed to function as four different restaurants. It is currently being used as a TuTaco restaurant, but can easily transition to “The Iron Waffle”, “The Egg Shop”, or “Smashed” (a baked potato restaurant). Each of the four restaurants will have their own unique menus, and students will have the opportunity to periodically vote for their choice of restaurant. The innovation kitchen will then transition to serve the menu from the top requested restaurant.

Northeast Polk County Government Center

The 40,000 square foot renovation of the Northeast Polk County Government Center was completed using the Fast Track method to meet the aggressive ninety day deadline. Henkelman Construction, Inc. worked with Polk County as a complete team in attaining our goals and in resolving difficult issues as they arose.
